I spoke to the guys down in Woodwork, and they suggested using 1.5mm birch, that way there is the pattern and also its the same diameter as medium sized card, so it has flexibility within it that makes it mimic paper. I really like this quality.

ISTD - Wood
I have purchased £60 worth of wood for the brief. I really needed to get wood that actually looked like wood, as opposed to the MDF that i had been trying to use.
