Brief 8 - Combined Briefs Evaluation

Brief 8 – Combined Small Briefs

These range of small briefs allowed me to explore very different styles of branding, covering a range of different context for them. For example, doing quick day turn around briefs to a full pitch and proposal for a new re-branding. These briefs helped me develop skills in working collaboratively as well as working with different styles of production, mostly working with digital production and not involving processes so much. At the beginning of this module I really wanted to further my skills with working with clients and these three briefs gave me the opportunity to do this, in some very different ways. I think the most exciting part of these briefs was with the St.Martins brief, which allowed me to go speak to the client as well as visit the surroundings, which in turn meant that I could get a better understanding of the design. Although the pitch wasn’t successful, the time working and corresponding with the client was extremely valuable.
I may not have got to produce work for these clients that I would necessarily do, but it taught me a lot about working with clients styles and demands, which will be extremely helpful in the future.

Alias Proposal

// I had to work and put together an outlining proposal for the Alias brief. I wanted to create some form of brand guidelines that Poppy could follow so that she could do it herself, as she is focused on creating the designs too. I think its important for me to step back after this stage and let her get on with it, as it is her clothes, her image.

I spoke with her today and she was really happy about the stuff i have produced, and she really wants to get on with it herself now. I think the main aim for her now is to incorporate the elements i have brought in, and apply them to everything that she needs. We previously went through a list of deliverables that she could use, and i think thats what she is going to apply them too.

Crit Feedback

// today we had the first crit that relates to our briefs, it was a good chance to see what stage everyone was at, and get some valuable input into my briefs. I really needed help with my dylan thomas brief, and lulu brief.

Whilst going through my briefs with everyone Lorenzo suggested that i combine the two small briefs  i have with the fashion student and the photography client, because they just arn't big enough to stand alone and get marked on. So im going to pull them together, because i will be handing voer the fashion student brief back to her so she can now get on, i think i will now act more as a guide then a designer on it. This is good because it allows me to focus on my other more substantial briefs, and really get my teeth into them.

// So with regards to my dylan thomas brief, as a general consensus people thought i needed to include more of his other poems, the ones people dont really know about and treat them as individual artwork. It was also suggested that the work i produce can be used as a bumper pack for people who dont necessarily know him or what he did. So this is where i am going to go from. I think the main problem that i am having with this brief is the fact that it is similar to the poster brief i have already done. However, Lorenzo pointed out that this isn't really a problem because i can do it, but this time better and i have a more solid context surrounding the deliverables. Which has put my mind at ease.

// With the LULU brief, i just need to keep developing and pushing it, experimenting and designing for it. Its important that i start producing this work so that i can really focus on the finish and deliverables.

// I have also started working on my Cleo tavern brief, this is something that i view to be substantial and i need to try and focus on getting the logo and deliverables outlined for it.

I am now going to focus all my time and effort on the Dylan Thomas brief, the lulu brief and Cleo tavern. This is so that i can really focus on getting work produced. I also have the St Martins brief, but we havent heard anything back yet so its been put on the back burner.

Evaluation So Far..

I need to do an evaluation of each brief, just to try and get my focus back and what i need to do. I have been working sporadically over my briefs and i feel like i need to reign them back in.

// 1. Yearbook - Got the concept designed, waiting for the information. Need to map out work systems and the grid for the book.

// 2. LuLu Fashion Label - Logo design done. Working on Application across deliverables which are:
- Envelopes
- Stationary
- Stickers
- Packaging - tissue
- Labels
- Invoices

All deliverables focusing on the delivering element of branding to the client.

// 3. Dylan Thomas - Worked out deliverables, but need the crit to try and work the best way to tackle it. At the moment it stands as:
- A promotional stand at Waterstones
- 2 Posters - one for the book, one for the poem
- Re-design book cover
- Re-design audio cd
- Promotional bedding to go alongside poem.

I feel a bit all over with this brief and i need to bounce ideas with everyone

// 4. NHS - I have put together the proposal for the logo and now we are just waiting on the response.

// 5. Fashion Student - Been applying her logo in a range of different ways. Need to explore more soa s to get as much out of the logo as possible.

// 6. Charlotte - Logo design and application onto business cards.

As it stands I have 6 briefs on the go but the substantial ones defiantly need more work. Doing this evaluation I have actually realised where i am going wrong and what i need to do in order to get back on track.

NHS

I put together the proposal boards for the pitch to Camilla. Outlining the concepts for the logos as well as showing the development and application of the logo across different visuals.

Sai put together the brand guidelines, outlining a basic structure that would be applied to the signage and any other material they would need.

After my correspondents with Camilla she said that we would be hearing from her by Thursday.

NHS

I have applied the first logo to a range of different signage deliverables.

// Range of proposals

NHS

I met up with Sai today and showed her my ideas for the logo, she agreed on the logos and agreed with me on the fact that the designs defiantly need to be made more organic so as to make it more appealing to the appropriate audience.

At this point that we agreed that Sai would take on the logos and add her touches because we needed to get some edits in that i possibly couldn't see.

While Sai is editing the logos i am going to start work on the proposals ideas for the range of deliverables that the logo can go across. Focusing on the signage elements of the deliverables just to give a rounded view of what it can be transfered across.

 // VECTORED IMAGES

NHS

I took on the cylindrical logo design and started adding colour, this was just to see how it would look with applied colour and whether it would still work. I experimented with different styles, and then reversed out the line to fill to see what effect it had and i think that this actually works better as a visual and as a concept. the overlapping pattern insinuates the whole idea of them working together through relationships developing partnerships within a diverse community.

NHS

After selecting some of my favorite briefs i have now started looking at vectoring some of the chosen few. Its easier for me to see them on screen and then work out what is working and what isn't.
Some things look a lot better on paper then they do on screen, and this way i can work to start editing them, or changing elements to make them work better.

Here are the initial vectoring ideas i have come up with.

// SET OF VECTORED LOGOS

__________________________________________

// FAVORITE 1

I think this design is good, because it encompasses the whole open and diverse feel to it, changing the stoke weight in order to add diversity. The main problem with this logo will be the fact that it might appear to clinical for the practice. So i think im going to have to develop this further.

// FAVORITE 2

This logo is another possibility, it is a lot simpler than the first logo, it is really just working with the whole idea that patients and doctors talk and think and its really that simplicity that i want to get across. I think again this needs re-think as it looks a little clinical.

I will show all these initial logos to Sai and see what she thinks, she will be able to suggest how to make them appear more natural and maybe make them less clinical and more friendly.

NHS

I have been looking through my research and I have been looking at inspiration for the designs that would be appropriate to the practice.
I deiced to re-outline the core values of the practice so as to get a better understanding of where to go with the designs, and what i was looking at.

The main values that i want to include in this logo are; relationships, diverse, open, partnerships, kind and caring. It is important that visually i encompass these values as they depict everything that the practice is about. So through these i have came up with certain visuals that could represent these and have transfered them into logo design ideas.

As i came up with initial ideas i chose my favorite styles, that i thought were most appropriate. These tended to be the logos that were circular, had elements overlapping or were clean and simple. I think they vary from very experimental to quite generic. this was so that in the pitch we could have something quite diverse, and try and see what sort of scale they would want to work with.

// CHOSEN DESIGNS TO WORK WITH

We know that Camilla wanted something experimental and not generic so thats what i have tried to keep in mind when coming up with ideas.

Alias

//| I have taken the logo and started applying it to a pattern, I had an idea that we could cut through on the swing tags this way it would be using the same concept with the logo and applying it to make a tactile swing tag.

Alias logo

// Within the logo, i have edited so that it represents the separate items of clothing that Poppy is proposing to sell within her brand. Each blocked off section links to a specific item of clothing. For example the large middle triangle represents a shirt. Whereas the two blocks at the side represent trousers. and so on. This was a concept that Poppy came up with, and I have just executed it within her designs. The next stage is to work out the most appropriate format for it to be delivered in.

// SHIRT

// TROUSERS

Charlotte - Professional Photographer DAY BRIEF

\\|| I was given a small branding brief from Amy Leigh for her fine art Photography friend Charlotte. I spoke to Charlotte with regards to what she wanted and she wanted a basic business card, that had a logo and a selection of her images that would explain and show who she is as an artist. This was a really good brief to get because it was something that was quick and easy, but really fun to do because i had complete free reign to do what i thought was best.

Charlotte had already chosen the font that she wanted to use, so that was sorted as well as the selection of images that she wanted to use.

// CHOSEN FONT - NEOU

// INITIAL IMAGES

These were some of the initial logo designs i came up with for Charlotte, i took the initials for her name, she wanted something simplistic that would represent her. I decided to go with a joint initial logo, using the hard edges to define the name and the shape of the logo. It can also transfer it quite easily across a range of media.

These are a range of simple layouts i tried on the business card, there was a lot of information so it was quite hard to utilise the space. I minimised the type as much as possible without losing legibility and readability.

After sending the initial ideas through Charlotte wanted the address taking away as she wouldn't know where she would be in a few months, which made my job a bit easier as i could simplify it down. I have sent the new tweaks through and am just waiting a response.

Alias

I received Poppy's logo today, it was a bit of a mess so my main aim at the moment was to tidy it up, so that i can start applying it to its relevant deliverables. Once the logo is tightened i can then use its pattern to start creating patterns, developing them and using them to inspire more applications.

NHS Briefing

\\| We had a meeting today at StMartins with Camilla, before we met i had sent an email of what we wanted to have so that we could get a better feeling for the company. We also needed to establish when we would send in our submission boards, in order to get the ball rolling on the design:

Monday 20th February

This meeting was really helpful because it has outlined key things that we need to focus on with regards to generating the logo. Main points being:
- Open
- Partnership
- Relationships
- Team
- Diverse
These are the main focuses on the idea generation for the future.

SOI Tutorial

Today, i had a really helpful group tutorial with Lorenzo. We went through everyones statements of intent, and pin pointed areas we needed to investigate and helped focus our briefs. I went into this not knowing exactly what i was going to discuss but i knew that i wanted to discuss my briefs because they are all around the same thing pretty much, and I'm not sure this is going to be helpful to my practice.

Lorenzo helped narrow down my umbrella statement, because he thought i was being a bit too specific and that i needed to really focus on the fact that my practice is very process driven, and i like to explore different methods of printing and creating finishes. He also suggested that i need a creative brief, where it gives me the opportunity to really explore processes but with a direction at the end of it. When he said this i realised that that is what i was lacking, something to really have fun with and that can be on-going investigation, much like the poster brief i did before christmas, because i used that brief a lot to help inform my other briefs.

What i am going to do is change the competition brief 'Scotch Whiskey' and instead do a brief i've wanted to do for a while which is create some form of range of one of prints around one of my favourite poets Dylan Thomas. Im not 100% sure what i want to do with this brief with regards to deliverables but i know the general idea of how i want to go about exploring it. This way i can use everything i learned within the last module to inform and push my practice that bit further and create something really fun, but also help all my other briefs go along.

Meeting with Poppy

I had a meeting with Poppy today to discuss what exactly it was that she wants and how we are going to go about it. I think its important to try and work out what it is she wants, so that i can help.

We outlined the deliverables for her branding, and from there we have decided that i am going to put together the logo on a range of different stocks with a range of different finishes and then we will work out how best to apply them. Seeing as she has already organised the logo, its easy to apply it. We want to try and create something that is tactile, and daily heavily process driven. So it will be a case of exploring the right method of printing to do for the applications.

NHS Briefing

\\| | We had a meeting today with Camilla, from St.Martins private doctors. They need to be branded so that when they move office, they can be recognised by their patients and attract more. We will be having a meeting with them on Monday 6th Feb, in order to get a feel for the company and what they do. We also established that both myself and Sai would be the main points of contact for everyone.

Both Sai and I also decided to work together, so working collab on this brief.
