Brief 7 - Branding Evaluation

Brief 7 – Branding

This was by far my smallest brief, and originally I wanted it to be something that I worked on from Easter onwards – however I realized that the other main briefs I was working on at the time had more potential and I needed to focus my efforts on them to get them completed to a standard I was happy with. So this meant that initially I worked on this brief sporadically, coming up with a range of different concepts and deliverables. However it constantly had an underlying theme, I knew that I wanted this brief had to represent me and my interests in branding, and my thoughts on it. I wanted this brief to explore the ideas I had put across in my dissertation whilst encompassing the research I had been doing throughout this module.
As I began generating ideas and development for this brief I began to see that there was a clear link forming between my DC brief and this brief, as well as touching on elements of my PPD module. As the brief progressed I realized that this was becoming all about my interests as a designer, which I was really happy with because it allowed me to put what I thought about design into a context that worked for me. By creating an =idea that would help deconstruct branding, as I did in my dissertation, but in a visual way is something that I will be able to refer back to through my career hopefully in the future. Due to the fact that this brief was solely designed for the design community it allowed me to have free-reign with regards to the format of it, and I managed to do formatting and publication design which I had previously touched on in my other briefs but I managed to really push in this brief. I also got the opportunity to work on on-screen design, although initially I didn’t really want to touch on-screen design I felt that within this brief it needed it, and I am actually very happy that I have done it because it has removed to daunting misconception of on-screen design.
Out of all my briefs this has been my favorite, I think due to the fact it was quite small and a fast turn around brief meant I couldn’t get sick of it and I could have as much fun with it as possible, whilst it revolved around a concept that I was really interested in. I think this brief was a culmination of my last three years studying graphic design, and its been very satisfying creating something that I am extremely happy with and can keep with me in the future. My only regret with brief is I wish I had spent more time on it, because initially I didn’t really see the potential in it until I started working on it. However, if I had started it earlier I may not have made the decisions I did and came up with the concept I did so as it stands I am happy.

Branding Development Boards

I have collated and created a flip book that follows the evolution of this brief from the range of initial concepts to my skill development with on-screen delivery. Then the final production of the brief, including documentation of choices made and development.

App mock up onto screen

Taking the app design that i developed i have used the photoshop skills that i have been developing to mock it up onto an iphone display, this is so as to give it a rounded context and to prove that it works on-screen. I have chosen a selection of designs to display in order to show the rounded designs and show the functionality of the app.
The idea is you would tap to pick the table or elements and the swipe through the elements and tap in order to read the details.

App design

In order to create a balance between the on-screen delivery for this brief i have decided to push the range across an app design. I have never done anything like this before, but using the identity that i have created i am planning on using the same simple format for the app and the website. I want them to mimic one another, whilst at the same time being fairly individual.

web development

Now i have established the web site designs and shapes i have now worked on putting the screen onto the mocked up mac screen. I have done a range of different screen shots in order to see the extent of design, and the detail on the website itself, such as the scroll over buttons.

Web development

I have been working on the mock up for the screen context of the web designs i have done. This involves quite  a bit of photoshop, which is helping me improve my skills, but it does mean it takes a little longer than the average person at the moment.
I have been editing the actual screen so that i can then place the jpeg straight onto the screen in order to get the best fit and make it look more realistic.

Scroll over

In order to give definition to the buttons that would be highlighted i have given them a different colour that would be associated with that element, linked through the publication. By adding the gradient and enlarging them slightly, this would be the effect of the roll over buttons and it shows the level of depth and shape to the buttons themselves.

Gradiented table

I have added subtle gradient to the table and the elements within it, this is to give the lok of shine over the elements and try and give them a sense of depth. I want them to have the look like you could push them/touch them, so by generating a sense of light around it gives the them some shape. I defiantly prefer this to the flat design that i had created with the previous development.

Initial web layout

taking on the tweaked and designed table i have started playing around with the layout and style of the website, experimenting with the style and shape of the icons. How to incorporate colour and what pages were best to show.
As i was developing i did realise that i didn't want to have the flat colours for the icons, that it made it look really childish and not very aesthetically pleasing. Out of the development i did the only thing i liked was the grid and pages idea, as well as the interactive buttons i designed but i defiantly need to re-think that design style of the overall website.

Experience elements

taking on the layout of the periodic table, i have separated the main elements, in my opinion, that makes brands experiences so that they could the be combined and it would then give the purpose of the branding elements analysis. So you could compare and contrast against the main body of periodic tables.

New table layout

In order to set up the website as well as finishing the publication design i had to finish the layout for the table itself, as well as add the res tof this information,. This turned out to be very time consuming, but i am really happy with the effect because i feel that it really looks like a periodic table, whilst at the same time having a unique style mirroring the content.

Cover development

Taking on the cover design for the original cover i have taken a selected amount of covers for the annuals and added colours which can be loosely associated to the elements themselves, working together with the info and research.

Web inspiration

I have been looking into web designs that i find interesting, sites that are aimed at designers and have a fairly simplistic and functional feel which is exactly the sort of thing that i want to achieve.

Packaging - card and net

I have created the net out of card, and it still works with the rigid shape. So i have now taken the measurements from the net and transferred it onto screen. My idea now is to add the simple branding of the element that is incased within the packaging as well as the lines with which to write to the addressee.

Packaging marked out - paper model

Now that i have come up with the basic net i wanted, i have marked it out on paper and tried to create a paper model to double check that it can actually fit within the design for the stamp. I wanted to do this to also check the measurements and sizing of the net that i had designed. It seemed to work okay, so the next stage was to then try and create it out of card so that it work in a rigid format.

Packaging - idea and net

After creating the pulication, i need to now consider the packaging element for the element stamp itself as this would accompany the publication. Originally i was thinking of placing it in the envelope, however when i tested this it looked ugly. So i have decided to create a simple bit of packaging to encompass the stamp.

Cover

I have chosen to do a fairly minimal cover design for this brief, again focusing on the chosen element to create the branding. As well as creating a simple 'branding elements' title that would go along with each edition. Although this may count as the branding, the main branding of this brief lies within the element design. The title, currently, is something that is holding the annuals together. I also think that i may incorporate the stamp onto the front of the design, bringing it all together.

Publication edition 1

// THE COMPLETED PUBLICATION
The layout for each annual publication would defiantly mimic this style, but i have left enough room for playing around in as each annual would be different and they style would need to alter in order to encompass this change.

Evaluation - branding and dc

As i have been developing this brief, i have begun to realise that it seems to be morphing into a 'sister' brief for my DC. I am using similar information to inform and generate the content, whilst at the same time using it to inform my design practice. Although they are two separate publications, this brief seems to be a more in depth look at the branding world that i am interested in. In both my DC publication and this annual, i have used information for my dissertation which again was informed by my research for DC and vice versa. This coincidence is interesting, because it has made me realise how much i am actually invested in the intricacies of branding. This was completely coincidental, but i am happy that both briefs now seem to be informing one another, and i am really enjoying drawing the parallels between both.
