Cleo Tavern - Moodboards

I have been trawling through my research trying to gain some inspiration and perspective for my project, especially now that i have changed my idea. I have been going through logo books and the branding research i have done, just to try and see if anything will jump out at me so that i can get some new ideas, or change the ones i have already done.
I want to use a mixture of modern formats of type in the logo, as well as use old print techniques and styles in order to get the heritage of a tavern across.

// Going through these design i have started looking at doing some more designs, im not leaving the ones i have already done but it gives me a better idea of what i want to achieve.

Cleo Tavern Brainstorming

Im getting frustrated with these brief, not because of the concept but because i really dont want to churn out some generic cliche design. I want to try and twist it or turn it around into something more interesting. So after the two crits i had today i have started brainstorming some ideas on where i could place the tavern and how i can make it work aesthetically, as well as getting some initial ideas down for the content of the menus/tavern.

// The idea here is now to bring the Tavern across to London in Carnaby street, which is a novel street in itself, surrounded by new and exciting shops that appeal to a young sophisticated and trendy audience. There is a mixture of culture that happens around there and this is somewhere i feel the novel idea of the tavern can be brought into and would work.

// From here i have broken down the areas that i want to have behind my logo and identity. It is important that they all overlap and work together to form a cohesive brand and identity.

// I brainstormed some ideas about cowboys/ farmers from years ago, so that i can have some traditional American dishes that would be appealing now.

Logo moodboards

Under Milk wood

I have tried again with the Under Milk wood text, theres a lot less body copy so it's given me more room with the size of the type and the way that it works. I think that it actually works better. If i can establish a trend in this poster then i can apply the same format to the structure of the next poster regardless of the amount of body copy.

These are some absic attempts at overlaying the quotes. They need a lot of work, and im not sure the bestw ay to achieve it so im going to ahve to do a lot of experimenting to get it wrong.

LOTR - initial test

LOTR

I have tried out some initial ideas for the background of the poster to be the test from the books. Taking one of the larger books that i have available - Lord of the rings (LOTR) - I have attempted to fit in the whole text on one poster. When i did that i had to drop the text down to 2pt..which is ridiculous. So i have deiced thats the wrong avenue and i may have to spread it across more than one poster, which in turn does give me more room to put quotes from the text on.

// All of this is a little too small, i need to check how many posters i need to get this text across in order for it to work.

Stories

For the Dylan Thomas brief i need all the body copy of the books so that i can try and use it in the posters. So it restricts the amount of authors and stories i can use if i cannot get the body copy for the posters themselves.
I have got a range of links at the moment that have the body copy i want, in the format i need to use them:

WUTHERING HEIGHTS

A TALE OF TWO CITIES

UNDERMILK WOOD

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

LORD OF THE RINGS

THE COLLECTED SHORT STORIES OF ROALD DAHL

NEW DYLAN THOMAS BRIEF

I have decided to change my Dylan Thomas brief, i felt like i was going no where and that it was becoming really stagnant. So I decided that i needed to have a re-think. Still have the same concept of creating bespoke posters and around literature. But this time try and broaden it so that im not so pended in with Dylan Thomas.

I have decided to instead focus on changing the overarching context of the posters. The aim is now to re-introduce people to printed media and the book, through focusing on classics of our time. Incorporating old school writers such as Dickens to modern day classics such as Pullman. I think having a broad range, will make the context and way the stories can be displayed a lot more fun. I have been brain storming some initial ideas.

// My main concept is to have each book used as the background for the poster and then from there use the type to pick out elements from the story to create either a saying, image or phrase from it. Some of these stories are huge so this will be interesting. I want to story lines to be visible but not necessarily readable. Legible so you can see them and if you wanted to read them you could, but it isn't essential to the piece.

Andy crit

I had useful tutorial with Andy Lodge today, it was a bit haphazard seeing as i had just changed my main Dylan Thomas brief but he gave me some really good ideas. To make sure that my work actually has some clear purpose and design direction behind it.

We both just brain stormed some ideas for both the Cleo Tavern brief and the Dylan Thomas brief because it was important to get a more defined direction for these briefs.

MORNING CRIT

// Both Ailsa and i really needed some input in our briefs, and really just a chance to bounce ideas around one another because i think we both felt we had them but not enough to get a substantial understanding of our briefs. I also deiced at about 2am to change my Dylan Thomas brief because it was not going well and i wasn't achieving what i wanted to with it.
Polly also later joined in. This was actually a really good opportunity to get our ideas across to one another and see if they nade sense. I was looking for help with my Cleo Tavern brief and my Dylan Thomas brief, just to make sure that the ideas were sound and they both gave me new avenues to explore and try.

1. LULU - I know exactly what im doing now, and this is PRODUCING work. I need to start applying the textures and ideas i have and push it. I know i have been putting it off because i don't want to get it finished in a week, but i think i need to try and get some experimenting done so that i know what i can do in the future.

2. DYLAN THOMAS - As i said i have changed my idea. Instead of using dylan thomas and his works to inspire the posters, which i have been struggling with. I am instead going to focus on bring people back to the classics. I still want to do the bespoke poster ideas but instead focus on 10 writers and different storie methods i.e Dylan Thomas, JR Tolkein, Charles Dickens etc etc. I still need to research this and find the ones i want to use. I don't want to do just old classics but incorporate modern day classics such as Phillip Pullman. Im not sure exactly how im going to do this but i know this is now what i want to do.

3. CLEO TAVERN - This brief is still in its initial stages and i really need to start pushing it. So today was a chance to really brain storm some ideas. The more i look at the ideas i have done the more i want to veer away from the generic imagery of a tavern. Its been done to death, and its cliche. So the girls pointed out that i could move the tavern, instead using the original audience to inspire the design but bring it to a more sophisticated audience in London, or Edinburgh for example.

Now i know exactly what direction im heading with my ideas and concepts. Its now time to kick it up a notch and start producing work im actually happy with and push it.
